1. Sejarah Pengobatan Herbal di Cina
Di Cina pada tahun 2700 SM, kaisar dan ahli herbal Cina, Shen Nong, menyusun buku “Pen Tsao Kang Mu” tentang tanaman obat. Buku tersebut hingga saat ini masih digunakan.

2. Sejarah Pengobatan Herbal di Mesir Kuno dan Yunani
Pada zaman Mesir kuno, tanaman obat ditemukan di Piramida Giza oleh para arkeolog. Raja Hammurabi dari Babilonia (1800 SM) meresepkan tumbuhan obat, di antaranya mint untuk gangguan pencernaan. Riset modern membuktikan bahwa peppermint dapat memulihkan mual, muntah, dan mengurangi sakit perut. Pada abad I masehi tanaman obat mulai dipelajari.

Pada tahun 78 M, Dioscorides menulis buku yang berjudul “De Materia Medica”. Buku ini berisi 600 tanaman obat dan menjadi pedoman para pengobat hingga ratusan tahun. Pada abad ke-16, Paracelsus dari Swiss mengeksplorasi tumbuhan obat untuk mengobati penyakit. Hippocrates (460—377 SM), bapak kedokteran modern, memperkenalkan faktor yang bisa mempengaruhi kesehatan seseorang, yaitu ketinggian, cuaca, diet, higiene, dan herbal. Dokter Galen (131—199 SM) memanfaatkan herbal untuk pengobatan yang terkenal sebagai galenic medicine.

3. Sejarah Pengobatan Herbal di Arab
Ibnu Sina (Avicenna) adalah seorang dokter yang menulis buku The Canon of Medicine dan The Book of Healing yang hingga abad ke-17 kedua karyanya masih menjadi referensi, baik di universitas Islam maupun di Eropa. Ibnu Sina pada tahun 1025 juga menemukan minyak esensial, salah satu komponen penting dalam tumbuhan obat.

4. Sejarah Pengobatan Herbal di Eropa
Pada abad ke-18 di Inggris, seorang dokter dan ahli botani, William Whitering, mempelajari tanaman obat. Ia menemukan bahwa foxglove (digitalis) bisa digunakan sebagai obat penyakit jantung.

5. Sejarah Pengobatan Herbal di India (Ayurveda)
Ayurveda terdiri dari dua kata, yaitu Ayur yang berati “kehidupan”, sedangkan Veda berarti “mengetahui”. Sedangkan arti kehidupan adalah bersatunya jiwa dan raga, life is the union of body and mind. Manusia tercipta dari tiga kondisi, yaitu vata, pitta, dan kapha. Apabila keadaan tersebut tidak seimbang pada tubuh, maka akan menyebabkan penyakit. Untuk memulihkan kesehatan, dapat dibantu dengan cara diet, herbal, aroma terapi, yoga, dan meditasi. Kesehatan menurut Ayurveda merupakan keseimbangan fisik, psikologis, sosial, emosional, dan spiritual.

6. Sejarah Pengobatan Herbal di Indonesia
Nenek moyang orang Indonesia telah menggunakan obat tradisional yang dikenal sebagai jamu sejak berabadabad yang lalu. Bahan baku jamu antara lain adalah tumbuhan obat atau herbal. Jamu digunakan juga untuk memelihara kesehatan. Selain itu, jamu juga mampu mencegah dan mengobati penyakit. Indonesia memiliki sumber hayati berupa tanaman obat yang sangat banyak. Indonesia memiliki biodiversitas nomor dua terbesar di dunia setelah Brasil.
