Dan Tuhanmu mewahyukan kepada lebah: ‘Buatlah sarang-sarang di bukit-bukit, di pohon-pohon kayu, dan di tempat yang dibuat manusia. Kemudian makanlah dari tiap macam buah-buahan dan tempuhlah jalan Tuhanmu yang telah dimudahkan (bagimu). Dari perut lebah itu keluar minuman (madu) yang bermacam-macam warnanya, di dalamnya terdapat obat yang menyembuhkan bagi manusia. Sesunguhnya pada yang demikian itu benar-benar terdapat tanda (kebesaran Tuhan) bagi orang-orang yang memikirkan. (QS. An-Nahl: 68-69)

Madu adalah cairan yang menyerupai sirup. Madu lebih kental dan rasanya manis. Madu dihasilkan oleh lebah. Jika lebah madu sudah berada dalam sarang, nektar bunga dikeluarkan dari kantung madu yang terdapat pada abdomen dan dikunyah bersama lebah lain. Jika nektar sudah halus maka ditempatkan pada sel. Dan ketika sel sudah penuh, maka akan ditutup dan terjadilah fermentasi.

Potensi madu sebagai obat bisa digunakan sebagai agen topikal untuk luka dan infeksi kulit. Sebagian besar sifat terapeutik madu disebabkan oleh konsentrasi gula yang tinggi dan efek osmotik yang dihasilkan.

Madu adalah sumber karbohidrat alami yang menyediakan 64 kalori tiap sendok makan. Gula utama madu adalah monosakarida, fruktosa, dan glukosa.
